Bonney Lake Family Killed When Chunk of Concrete Falls on Their Car

A family in Bonney Lake, Washington — a youth pastor couple and their infant child — was killed Monday when a chunk of concrete on the Highway 410 overpass collapsed onto the roadway below, crushing their passing vehicle.

Josh Ellis and his wife Vanessa, 25 and 29 respectively, and their infant child were in the car reportedly on their way to Home Depot, the Tacoma News Tribune reported.

Eastpointe Foursquare Church held a vigil for the family Tuesday and hundreds traveled from the surrounding areas to pay tribute to the victims.

"They were the type of people everybody loves and gravitates toward," James Ludlow, pastor of Eastpointe Foursquare, told the News Tribune. "We call them pillar people. And now the pillar has been taken from us."

"This couple was huge in love," he continued. "Our job right now is to do what they did best, and that is to love well. We're believing that their legacy will live on and we'll continue to see that love increases."

Bonney Lake police officers were called to the scene around 10:15 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival, they learned that construction workers had been working on the outer permanent barrier wall when a portion of it fell.

The accident remains under investigation, according to KOMO-TV.

"We found that the . . . barrier that covers SR-410 that was being worked on by construction workers came loose from the overpass and fell onto Angeline Road and struck one vehicle that was traveling north on the road," Bonney Lake police officer Todd Green told the local station. "When it fell off the overpass, it landed square on the roof of the vehicle."

Green said the construction company WHH Nisqually was hired to do the freeway work for the city, but Staton Companies of Oregon was doing a lot of the work as a subcontractor.

No determination has been made as to whether Angeline Road should be shut down for the remainder of the project.

"That really is in the responsibility of the contractor to decide whether it is to be closed down," Green told KOMO-TV. "Right now it looks like a very sad accident."
