Human body parts were found on a street in San Francisco, stuffed into a rolling suitcase and strewn about the sidewalk.
"As far as a scene like this, every homicide we do deal with is always very tragic to the department," San Francisco police officer Grace Gatpandan
told CBS News. "However, this scene is a gruesome scene and out of the ordinary."
Police received a phone call at 4:30 p.m. tipping them off to the suspicious package on 11th Street near Market, and had to shut down the block just as soon as they'd arrived.
Officers reported that the body parts were so mutilated that they weren't initially sure if they were human or animal, and called in a medical examiner. The medical examiner soon confirmed that they were human, however declined to state if it was a man or a woman.
The South of Market neighborhood was traditionally a warehouse and light industrial area populated by many homeless people, however in recent years many Silicon Valley tech companies have moved into the area. Twitter's headquarters, for example, are less than two blocks from the scene.
Crime scene investigators said they are reviewing nearby security camera tapes, and noted that they "do have people of interest that homicide investigators are speaking to."
