A body was found in a suitcase left inside a locker at Japan's Tokyo Station this week and officials said the corpse of the elderly woman stuffed inside was likely there for a month.
A worker discovered the body Sunday after opening the abandoned suitcase that was left inside an unlocked
coin locker on April 26, The Associated Press reported.
The corpse reportedly belongs to an older woman who was 4-feet, 7-inches tall. Police are still struggling to identify her and to determine a cause of death.
“There was an abnormal odor when we opened the suitcase,” a representative at the
baggage storage company said, according to The Guardian. “Then we saw hair.”
Police are looking back at CCTV footage in an effort to identify the victim, the U.K. newspaper noted.
According to Junichi Omoto, a representative with regional train company JR East, there was nothing strange about the outside appearance of the bright yellow suitcase at first.
“We were surprised and horrified” when it was opened, though, Omoto said.
Apparently, it is customary to hold luggage for a month to see if anyone claims it. Large Japanese train stations also have banks of cellars for travelers to store items temporarily.
Tokyo Station is one of the busiest in the country, providing services for more than 150 million travelers a year, JR East said. The station is the connection for a number of bullet train lines, and is used for many traveling to and from the city.
