A body shot in the head was found on Apple's headquarters campus in Cupertino, California on Wednesday morning, and authorities said they believe the death was an "isolated incident."
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office was called to the Silicon Valley facility at 8:35 a.m. on a report of a "person down," reported
KNTV.
The
San Jose Mercury News, reporting on emergency dispatch audio, said a man was discovered bleeding from the head and "possibly had a gun." The newspaper said dispatchers later reported to deputies that "a body is in one of the conference rooms with a gun."
Reuters cited police as saying an Apple employee was found dead and said local media were reporting the victim had suffered a head wound and a gun was discovered near his body.
"They found one individual male down and that he was deceased," sheriff's spokesman Andrea Urena told a news conference. "Through further investigation they determined that there were no other individuals involved and they believe it was an isolated incident, and that there's nobody else on the campus or in the public that is at risk."
Urena declined to discuss how the man died.
USA Today said Apple has a security system that prevents non-employees from entering its campus. Visitors must visit a reception desk when they enter the Apple facility and obtain a badge before being let inside. Then, they are escorted by an Apple employee.
Access for most visitors is limited to the tech giant's store, noted USA Today, and journalists are often limited to a couple of buildings and are accompanied by uniformed staffers.
On Tuesday, Apple's quarterly earnings and revenue missed analysts' estimates and its guidance for the present quarter fell short as well, noted
CNBC. In its second fiscal quarter, Apple had earnings of $1.90 per diluted share on $50.56 billion in revenue.
Analysts expected the tech giant to report earnings of about $2 a share on $51.97 billion in revenue, noted a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters, per CNBC.
