The moon that will haunt skies Tuesday night is a Blue Moon, but the beauty really only comes from the fact that it’s a full moon – the moon isn’t really blue.
In fact, Tuesday’s moon carries a lot of names: the Full Sturgeon Moon, the Full Red Moon, the Green Corn Moon, and the Grain Moon.

The Blue Moon is so called because it’s the third full moon of a four full-moon season, The Huffington Post said, when most seasons have only three full moons. And getting rid of a common myth about Blue Moons, the news site said many people mistakenly think it’s the second moon in a month that has two full moons. It’s not.
The other names listed above are attached to the August moon for various reasons, including calling it the Full Sturgeon Moon because sturgeon fish are easily caught in this last summer month, the Huffington Post said.
Weather.com said tonight’s Blue Moon is the first in three years because it’s the first time we’ve had a four full-moon season in that time period.
The weather experts there said a moon can actually look blue, but that’s from atmospheric conditions like in the 1880s when an Indonesian volcano exploded and the ash made all the moons — full, crescent, etc. — look blue.
The rare appearance of a Blue Moon gave the English language the phrase “once in a blue moon,” which means “very rarely.”
