New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned Friday that the nation’s high unemployment numbers may lead to rioting in the streets, and urged Washington lawmakers to take action that will create jobs for Americans, according to the
New York Post.
Bloomberg discussed the issue during his weekly radio show on WOR in New York, saying that high unemployment faced by new college graduates is what sparked uprisings in Cairo and Madrid.
“You don’t want those kinds of riots here,” the mayor said, adding “the damage to a generation that can’t find jobs will go on for many, many years.”
Despite a recent poll showing 51 percent of Americans don’t believe the Obama administration’s $447 billion jobs plan will help the country’s unemployment problem, Bloomberg did have some positive words for the administration’s efforts.
“At least he’s got some ideas on the table,” he said, “whether you like those or not.”
