Bloomberg Approval Rate Rebounds After Hurricane

By    |   Monday, 12 September 2011 11:49 AM EDT

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s approval rating bounced higher at the beginning of the month after his popular handling of Hurricane Irene. That improvement comes after a downward trend since the end of last year, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

New Yorkers approving of Bloomberg’s job performance now total 54 percent, compared to 35 percent of those who disapprove. In July, his approval rating totaled 45 percent, compared to a 43 percent disapproval rating.

Quinnipiac interviewed 1,282 randomly selected registered voters by phone from Sept. 1 to Sept. 6. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.

This month’s score is Bloomberg’s best since the city’s Christmas-time blizzard.

His insistence on thorough preparations ahead of last month’s Hurricane Irene appears to be responsible for the rebound. City voters who approve of Bloomberg’s handling of the hurricane preparations far outnumber those who disapprove: 86 percent to 10 percent.
