A partially blind dog landed in a hot tub after falling 15 stories from a California apartment balcony and then swam to the edge to get out.
Sammy, a 13-year-old Boston terrier with sight issues, wandered too close to the balcony's edge in Bridgeway Towers in Sacramento and apparently fell through the railing on Dec. 22, its owner Bill McCourt told KCRA-TV
. What happened next was a stroke of luck.
Sammy splashed into a small in-ground hot tub. The dog was aware enough to begin swimming and eventually made it to the edge and stepped out before help arrived, McCourt told KCRA-TV.
"It's a Christmas miracle," McCourt told the television station. "You can't imagine a dog going through that kind of trauma."
A person who knew Sammy was surprised to see the dog in the hot tub, knowing that Sammy and McCourt lived on the 15th floor of one of the tallest residential high-rises in the city. The man contacted Bette Plumb, McCourt's mother, according to the Sacramento Bee
"My first thought was he must have got out and taken the stairs or the elevator or something," Plumb told the Bee. "But there's no way he could have gotten out of the condo. All of a sudden, I knew. It hit me immediately: He fell."
Plumb said by the time she made it downstairs, Sammy had managed to get out of the hot tub and was walking around with a slight limb.
"It's absolutely a miracle," Plumb told The Bee. "There's no way that dog should be alive."
The dog, which suffered several fractures to his pelvis and five rib fractures, was recovering last week at the VCA Bradshaw Animal Hospital, reported the Bee.
"Whenever I tell someone what happened, they keep saying, 'The 15th floor? Are you sure it was the 15th floor?' because no one can believe it," McCourt told the Bee. "They're completely amazed. I just want to get him home. He's a huge part of my family."
McCourt said he will not give Sammy a second chance to repeat the stunt.
"His balcony days are over."
