Billy Graham’s generational influence in American politics has been evident right up to his death, and is sure to continue long after, as evidenced by his son and his granddaughter being outspokenly on opposite sides when it comes to President Donald Trump.
Billy Graham’s family has always been closely linked with the White House, signifying how deep his political influence extended.
He shared close relationships with Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and was handpicked by numerous presidents to pray at their inaugurations, The Washington Post reported.
Franklin Graham has assumed his father’s evangelical ministry and has become a confidant of Trump, as USA Today reported, having famously suggested that Trump’s 2016 election victory was God’s answer to the country’s prayers.
However, in an interview recently with CNN, granddaughter Jerushah Armfield said she couldn’t understand why many evangelicals like her uncle Franklin Graham would support Trump just because of his policies.
Armfield said she wanted to see Christian leaders “come out and say that they support Trump for his policies, but that his behavior disgusts them, and he needs to clean up his act.”
She said she didn’t want Trump to “be held up as the poster boy for Christian evangelicals because he doesn't represent most of us.”
Armfield also said that “to suggest the president-elect is an ambassador to further the kingdom in the world diminishes not only my Jesus but all he stood for and came to earth to fight against,” the Washington Times reported.
Armfield, however, emphasizes that her uncle “has an incredible humanitarian ministry that’s been on the front lines often before a lot of ministries have been there,” Religion News Service reported.
