The photographer for Beyonce's upcoming Vogue cover shoot is 23-year-old Tyler Mitchell, who will be the first black photographer to shoot a Vogue cover in the magazine's 126-year history, HuffPost reported Monday.
Also unprecedented is the power Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour reportedly gave Beyonce over both the cover and the content of the September issue.
“The reason a 23-year-old black photographer is photographing Beyoncé for the cover of Vogue is because Beyoncé used her power and influence to get him that assignment,” a source told HuffPost.
The pop star will be featured in photographs throughout the September issue, and each photo will include long-form captions written by the singer, HuffPost reported.
Despite his young age, Mitchell was featured and interviewed by The New York Times last year in a piece headlined, “A Young Photographer With an ‘Honest Gaze.’”
“I depict black people and people of color in a really real and pure way,” Mitchell, who has shot for Marc Jacobs and Givenchy campaigns, told The New York Times. “There is an honest gaze to my photos.”
MSNBC contributor Touré tweeted it is embarrassing for Vogue that not a single cover had been shot by a black photographer until now.
Twitter users though it was about time.
