Bette Midler slammed Piers Morgan for criticizing Meghan Markle after she urged Americans to vote in the upcoming elections. Morgan's issue was that the Duchess of Sussex had gone against the crown's tradition of maintaining neutrality in elections, but Midler was quick to jump to Markle's defense.
"Oh, f--- off," she wrote in response to Morgan's tweet, in which he encouraged the queen to "strip the Sussexes of their titles."
In his post, Morgan added that the royal couple "can’t remain as royals & spout off about foreign elections in such a brazenly partisan way."
Markle voiced her appeal for women in America to vote during the virtual event "When All Women Vote" last week.
"We vote to honor those who came before us and to protect those who will come after us," she said. "At this juncture, if we aren’t part of the solution, we’re part of the problem. If you’re complacent, you’re complicit. We can make the difference in this election. And we will make the difference in this election."
Twitter users were divided over whether or not Markle should have remained silent.
"He's right, Bette," one follower wrote to the "Hocus Pocus" star in response to Morgan's comment. "They're free to do as they choose as private citizens but they're denigrating the Royal Family."
Another Twitter user agreed.
"Ms Midler, @piersmorgan is right, you see, we love our Queen and she remains our head of state and neutral ( your president is your head of state - just to educate you) I think Ms Markel can say what she likes, BUT NOT as a member of the Royal family, it is that simple."
Others strongly opposed Morgan's remarks.
"They are no longer working royals, they are entitled to voice their personal opinions as any other royal not on the civil list has been entitled to do," a Twitter user wrote.
"Didn't they already give up the titles and unroyal themselves," another wondered. "Apparently putting up with a--holes like Piers and living in a fish bowl had something to do with it."
