Bette Midler will reprise her role in “Hello Dolly!” for the last six weeks of the Broadway show this summer, producer Scott Rudin announced Friday.
Midler played the part of matchmaker Dolly Levi when the revival began last April and won a Tony award for the role. Bernadette Peters has played the role since Jan. 20 and will finish her turn on July 15 for Midler’s return, according to Playbill.
Original co-stars David Hyde Pierce as Horace Vandergelder and Gavin Creel, who won a Tony for portraying Cornelius Hackl, also will return, Playbill reported. Creel had been recuperating from a back injury and will return May 8, and Pierce will return with Midler. Tickets for the final six weeks of "Hello, Dolly!" go on sale April 28.
The show’s final week with Midler before Peters took over grossed nearly $2.5 million in seven performances, and the run also brought the highest pre-performance advance in Broadway history, Playbill reported.
"Hello, Dolly!" won best revival of a musical from the Tony Awards and was named one of Entertainment Weekly’s best shows of 2017.
“I am delighted to return to the scene of one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I know the brilliant Bernadette Peters enjoyed her turn as much as I did,” Midler said in a statement, Entertainment Weekly reported. “Dolly Levi is one of the most joyful characters in Broadway history, and Bernadette and I were lucky to be able to step into her glorious shoes.”
The show also was successful with Peters as star, grossing around $1 million per week, Variety Reported.
