Ben Carson and his wife Candy were part of a group that got stuck in an elevator briefly Wednesday while touring an affordable housing complex in Miami. No one was injured and they were released after about 15 or 20 minutes.
The incident occurred just after 8 a.m. at the Courtside Morning Apartment complex in Miami's Overtown section, NBC Miami reported. Rescue crews worked for about 15 minutes to free Carson, who was confirmed as secretary of Housing and Urban Development last month.
Carson, a former neurosurgeon and Republican presidential candidate, traveled to Miami for two days of meetings with local leaders including Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, developer Jorge Perez, and former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning, according to NBC.
The New York Daily News described the trip as a "listening tour" with local governments that will be affected by deep cuts to affordable housing mandated under President Donald Trump's proposed federal budget.
Carson issued his own Twitter post about his Wednesday morning meeting. His only reference to the elevator incident was thanking the Miami Police and Miami Fire departments.
NBC Miami reported that Carson is expected to visit Florida Memorial University Wednesday and appear as the keynote address at the NAACP Fair Housing Month Conference at Miami Dade College's North Campus.
