A black bear got its head stuck in a milk can in Maryland on Monday, but the state's wildlife officials soon came to rescue by tranquilizing and freeing the hungry animal.
A photo of the bear stuck in the metal milk jug made its rounds on social media after i
t was posted by the Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service, part of the state's Department of Natural Resources.
"The incident began around 6:45 a.m. Monday when a homeowner near Cunningham Falls State Park called wildlife officials and said a bear was on the property with a
milk jug stuck on its head," The Washington Post reported. "When wildlife officers arrived, they found the bear lying down with the jug on its head."
Wildlife officials used a small saw and their hands to pull the jug off the tranquilized bear, which weighed anywhere from 175 to 200 pounds, according to The Post.
"It was calm and relaxed," Patricia Allen, a spokeswoman from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, told the newspaper, adding that tranquilizing the animal made freeing it "much easier and much safer."
Karis King, another
Natural Resources spokeswoman, told The Associated Press that the male bear eventually regained consciousness and walked back into the nearby woods.
The bear's situation brought comparisons to the children's character Winnie the Pooh on social media.
