Bayonne schools in New Jersey, faced with a disturbing security threat posted on social media, shut down on Monday after authorities said there weren’t sure if the ominous tweet was for real.

The closures were announced Monday morning on the district’s website by Superintendent Michael Wanko, who said police were unable to discredit the tweet on Friday that threatened to shoot up all Bayonne public schools, WPIX reported.

“I apologize for the late notice, however, we were hopeful that the post would be deemed non-credible by this morning, and school could be in session,” Wanko said in a board of education statement.

The closures came a day after the district announced it would be increasing police presence at schools as a security measure in response to the threat – a move which officials later felt was not cautious enough.

“Postings like this cause much anguish and concern for parents, students, and staff,” Wanko said, noting that police were investigating the origin of the posting.

Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis explained that officials were unable to rule out the post’s credibility and as a result opted for full school closure in the area.

“I make this decision out of an abundance of caution,” Davis said in a post to Facebook.

The closings came shortly after two Dade County High School students in Chattanooga, Tennessee were taken into custody after one of the teenage boys was found to be in possession of an unloaded gun at school on Friday, The Times Free Press reported.

And in Rowlett, Texas, a teen was arrested after police found him in possession of a rifle and 100 rounds of ammunition while sitting in a car outside a high school sporting event on Thursday.

In a separate incident, a 17-year-old South Mecklenburg High School student was arrested after bringing a gun on campus on Wednesday, according to The Charlotte Observer.
