Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the Republican’s best hope for knocking off President Barack Obama because he won’t scare off moderate and independent voters, says Boston Herald columnist Joe Battenfeld.
Writing in today’s Herald, Battenfeld said Republicans who are hailing Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s entry into the 2012 presidential race “as the second coming of Ronald Reagan,” should ask themselves why Obama sees Perry “as more beatable” than Romney.
“Perry may very well remind voters of Ronald Reagan, but there’s also a chance he could remind them of J.R. Ewing,” Battenfeld said. “And if that happens, Obama would at least have a prayer of being re-elected.”
He urged Republicans to go with Romney who may be a “flip-flopper who can’t seem to decide who he wants to be,” but at least is battle tested on the national stage and has a “great resume for fixing the economy.”
Perry, he wrote, has little recognition outside of his home state, “shoots his mouth off and has some unusual ideas like issuing a proclamation for Days of Prayer for Rain.”
