Barry Farmer has adopted three sons as a single dad over the past six years and their interracial family have become a beacon of hope for those in the foster care system.

At age 20, Farmer knew he wanted to adopt one day and decided to respond to an ad in the local newspaper looking for foster parents, Adopt Us Kids wrote.

After meeting with a social worker the process was set in motion and a year later he had completed the steps required to be licensed as a foster parent.

During this time, 8-year-old Jaxon came into his life. There was an immediate bond and Farmer decided to adopt the child.

"My oldest has been calling me dad since the day I got him," the 30-year-old father told WTVR. "And I really didn't know how to respond to it, I was so young at the time. And I just said, OK, I guess we're gonna do this. I guess this is the role that I must play now."

In 2013 Farmer began to think about adopting again and started browsing adoption websites, where he found out about his now-adopted son Xavier, who came to live with them at age 11, Inside Edition noted.

The thought of adopting a third child did not cross his mind until Jeremiah, who was 4 at the time, was brought to his home.

"While he was visiting us, quite often the conversation came up about adoption because he was now legally free as well," Farmer told Inside Edition.

In 2016, Jeremiah officially joined the family.

The story comes at a time that the U.S. is faced with a serious foster care crises, The Miami Herald reported.

There are critical shortages of foster parents in several states and the children are more vulnerable to slipping through the cracks of the system.

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of children pushed into foster care, The Ledger-Enquirer reported, and this could in part be attributed to the opioid epidemic gripping the U.S.

Farmer said adoption can be rewarding and fulfilling.

"There's no reason to be afraid of our foster children who are waiting to be adopted," he said, per The Miami Herald. "Fatherhood has brought me lots of joy. I can't imagine my sons not being with me."
