Barefoot Contessa Lawsuit: Ina Garten Sues for Infringement

By    |   Thursday, 19 February 2015 01:10 PM EST

"Barefoot Contessa" Ina Garten filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against OFI Imports Inc., a company she alleges sells a copycat version of her frozen meals.

According to Eater.com, the lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District court in Manhattan, and explains that the manufacturer of the copycat brand has a history with the celebrity chef.

The Barefoot Contessa frozen meals were originally manufactured by Contessa Premium Foods, which Garten has no stake in. She tried to purchase it last year, but the company soon went out of business.

OFI purchased the defunct Contessa Premium Foods, however Garten's lawsuit says the company did not purchase the licensing rights to the Barefoot frozen meals.

It appears that instead of licensing the meals, OFI created a competitor — a product line called "Contessa Chef Inspired" meals.

As many news outlets highlight on Twitter, the packaging of the competitor is strikingly similar to the Barefoot Contessa's line.

"The continued production of products bearing the name 'Contessa Chef Inspired' and sold in a way that is virtually identical to 'Barefoot Contessa' dinners, represents clear infringement of our intellectual property rights," said a release from Garten's representatives, Consumerist.com reported.
