Barbara Alston, a singer with the '60s girl band The Crystals, has died from complications of the flu at age 74.

Alston’s daughter Donielle Prophete told BBC News she died Feb. 16 due to the illness.

"She loved The Crystals," Prophete told the BBC. "She always talked about singing with them, the work they created together. She loved the sisterhood part of it, the traveling."

Alston was lead singer of the band in the early 1960s, which grew out of the group singing in church. The girls were discovered by producer Phil Spector, who coached them to hits such as “Then He Kissed Me” and “There’s No Other Like My Baby.”

Alston didn’t think of herself as the lead singer, Prophete said, but "they loved her voice and kept pushing her to the front," the BBC reported.

The band created some controversy when they released single “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss),” which talked about domestic violence, but Spector eventually pulled it from the airwaves.

Alston had not wanted to do the controversial song, and stepped back from the lead after it was pulled, the BBC reported. She was still with the group in 1963 when it hit big with “Da Doo Ron Ron,” but La La Brooks was lead singer on that and other subsequent hits.

Prophete recalled that Alston “would always sing around the house, especially around Christmas,” the BBC reported.

Fellow Crystals singer Dee Dee Kennibrew is scheduled to speak at Alston’s funeral on Friday, the BBC reported.

Twitter fans were sorry to hear of Alston’s death.
