Barack Obama and Joe Biden surprised lunch-goers on Monday when they strolled into a Washington, D.C. bakery together and hung around for nearly an hour chatting and posing for pictures. What the pair was up to together, besides grabbing lunch, went unasked.
The casually dressed former president and vice president greeted patrons and employees of the Dog Tag Bakery, several blocks from the Potomac River in the city's Georgetown section, as they stocked up with two sandwiches — ham and gruyere and turkey with brie — and a fennel salad, along with a mint-basil olive oil cake, a chocolate chip cookie, and a brownie, the Washingtonian reported.
"It felt like two friends coming in for lunch" said Meghan Ogilvie.
While Obama has kept a relatively low profile since leaving office, Biden is still openly considering a run for president in 2020, The Hill reported. Biden said earlier this month that he will decide for sure by January.
According to its website, Dog Tag Bakery is a nonprofit that works with veterans entering the civilian life through its fellowship program. It combines education with hands-on experience to create a living business school for the military veterans participating.
"It was a total surprise," Ogilvie, Dog Tag's chief executive, told the Washingtonian. "Honestly everyone freaked out. They took the time to shake every hand, take selfies when asked. They recognized each of our service members."
Obama even struck a yoga pose for patrons after one veteran told him that her goal after the fellowship was to become a yoga instructor.
"At the end President Obama had some amazing parting words about service members and what we can do to support them," Ogilvie told the Washingtonian. "We're a nonprofit, and we've worked really hard. Having someone of their stature come in here means everything."
Several went to social media share the visit.
