A St. Louis bar has drawn national attention after posting to its Facebook page that it would boycott the St. Louis Rams after players made a “hands up, don’t shoot” gesture during Sunday’s pre-game introductions.
The gesture has been used by protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, after a grand jury decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed black teen Michael Brown.
In a Facebook post, the bar called the Rams gesture a “bone-headed” act and said it would “stand up to thugs who destroy our community and burn down local businesses, and boycott the other thugs/organizations who support them.”
The post received more than 47,000 likes and almost 11,000 shares as of Tuesday afternoon. The bar posted that it would end its happy hour promotions for Rams games and support the Kansas City Chiefs instead.
Many took to Yelp to speak out against the bar’s decision to boycott the Rams.
“The racism is nice and fresh here. Enjoy,” one reviewer wrote.
“Racist establishment. Boycott this place! A boy lost his life and they are worried about a harmless protest by the Rams players. I hope Rams move to LA!” another wrote.
Some supported the establishment.
“Wonderful atmosphere. Great staff, and they are supporters of other local businesses! Keep it up! Will continue to support your business!” one person wrote.
Twitter users also posted mixed reactions.
