The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra held a free post-riot concert outside the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on Wednesday afternoon while the Baltimore Orioles played the Chicago White Sox at completely empty Camden Yards.
Orioles team officials elected not to allow any fans into the ballpark because of safety concerns. The decision was made when the rioting started and the scope of violence unknown.
According to The New York Times, the symphony's music director Marin Alsop wrote on Twitter and Facebook on Tuesday that she was "heartbroken for our dear city."
"With so much need alongside so much possibility, I hope we can use any opportunities we get to set an example and inspire others to join us in trying to change the world," said Alsop.
A portion of the outdoor concert was captured on YouTube.
A message on the symphony's website said that Sunday's performance of Brahms' "German Requiem" at Towson United Methodist Church will now be given in memory of Freddie Gray and the concert will include "a plea for peace and reconciliation."
Many who attended Wednesday's outdoor concert showed their appreciation on social media.
