British bakery Greggs has apologized for putting a sausage roll in baby Jesus’ place in a nativity scene image featured in its promotional Advent calendar.
Greggs apparently meant the image as a light-hearted homage to its sausage rolls, but it caused outrage when the image appeared on social media to promote the calendar. Many pointed out Jesus was Jewish and wouldn’t have eaten pork, as well as the sacrilegious aspect of replacing the Christian savior with a sausage roll.
Other images featured included Santa Claus with pastry flakes in his beard, a Greggs shop inside a snow globe, and a woman about to kiss a chicken slice under the mistletoe.
Chief executive of conservative group The Freedom Association Simon Richards called for a boycott of Greggs for its “sick anti-Christian Advent calendar” and called on the bakery to donate profits to the Salvation Army UK.
A spokesperson for the bakery said in a statement, “We’re really sorry to have caused any offense, this was never our intention,” CNBC reported.
While many Twitter users were offended, some thought putting a sausage roll in baby Jesus' place wasn't that big of a deal and others joked about it.
