Father in Custody After 2-Week-Old Baby Found Dead in Woods

By    |   Monday, 09 October 2017 04:55 PM EDT

The father of a 2-week-old Georgia baby found dead in the woods Sunday is in custody and is being held as a person of interest in the girl’s death.

The infant, Caliyah McNabb, disappeared Saturday, and her body was found in a duffel bag in the woods Sunday afternoon by volunteers searching the area for her, The Journal-News reported.

Chris McNabb, the baby’s father, jumped out of a car and ran away Sunday afternoon after her body was found, WSBTV reported. He was found by authorities and arrested a few hours later on a probation violation.

The baby’s mother also was questioned but is not considered a suspect or person of interest at this time, WSBTV reported.

The parents reported the baby missing Saturday morning around 10 a.m. They said they fed her at 5 a.m., but she was gone when they woke up, WSBTV reported.

“She was so tiny. So innocent. Stuff like this ain’t supposed to happen,” Caliyah’s grandfather Tim Bell told WSBTV on Sunday.

On Monday Bell spoke to WSB again, saying, “All of you viewers, do not forget she was 2 weeks old, when y’all feel sympathy for the mother and father, at the end of the day, they were parents, they knew right from wrong.”

An autopsy is being performed on the body to determine how and when the infant died, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

“A 15-day-old child obviously didn’t leave by themselves,” Keith Crum of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said, the AJC reported.
