A baby girl in Missouri was born with two front teeth last week, surprising everyone from her parents to her nurses.
"Right when she first arrived everyone was shocked," Jaklina Bailey said of her daughter, Alyssa Bella Bailey,
according to KOLR-TV. "They said, ‘she has two front teeth?’ It was just the big talk in the delivery room."
The rare occurrence, known as "natal teeth," happens in about 1 in every 2,000 to 3,000 births, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The teeth, usually on the bottom gum, often are removed, especially if they are loose and could pose a danger to the infant.
Jaklina Bailey said she'll use a bottle to breastfeed the infant and will watch for the teeth to become loose and pose a choking hazard.
A baby born with teeth in England last year also drew attention.
Doctors at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, England,
told UPI that they see a baby born with teeth once or twice a year.
