Ayub Ali, the father of two Parkland school shooting survivors, was shot to death Tuesday after a robbery at his convenience store in North Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Ali was shown on surveillance video released by police Thursday handing over cash and not resisting the robbery, CBS News reported. The suspect left after taking the cash, but police said he returned shortly afterward and shot Ali. It is not known why the suspect returned to kill Ali when he already got away with the money.
Police found the injured man and took him to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead there, NBC Miami reported.
Police are searching for Ali's killer, who was shown in the video wearing a black vest, reddish-orange shorts, and a skullcap that said “Miami.”
Ali, 61, was from Bangladesh, and the Bangladeshi community in Parkland is supporting Ali’s widow and children, NBC reported.
Ali’s daughter and son were in Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School when a shooting occurred on Feb. 14 in which 17 people were killed. He also leaves behind a 22-month-old son and a son going into first grade.
Friend Joaquin Nieves said he told Ali just last week to be careful when working alone at the store. "Please, anyone knows anything tell them speak up," said Nieves, CBS reported. "Tears me apart, I hope somebody seen something somebody call the cops. Please let's stop the violence."
The convenience store reopened Thursday, with customers making a memorial for Ali, NBC reported. Police are continuing to investigate tips to find the killer.
