Australian protesters buried their heads in the sand — literally — on a Sydney beach Thursday to protest the country's prime minister stance on climate change.
About 400 people gathered on Bondi Beach to make a strong statement about Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his refusal to put climate change on the agenda for the
G20 summit, which will be held this weekend, Vice reported.
The protesters seemed especially annoyed at Abbott’s stand given the announcement that the United States and China reached emissions agreements this
weekend in Brisbane, according to Reuters.
"Obama's on board, Xi Jinping's on board, everyone's on board except one man," activist Pat Norman, 28, yelled through a megaphone during the protest.
Australian activists were on the streets protesting in September, too, ahead of the United Nations climate
conference in New York, ABC News said.
At that time, about 10,000 people marched in Melbourne and 1,500 in Brisbane.
"All responsible players around the world have indicated as much this is an economic, a social, and an environmental challenge," Labor's environment spokesman Mark Butler told ABC News, adding that Abbott should've included climate change on the G20 finance agenda that was held in Cairns in September.
"A very serious series of meetings without addressing climate change is simply missing out on that opportunity and that challenge," he said.
