Ashton Kutcher went all out for Mother's Day this year, surprising his mom Diane with a surprise remodel of her Iowa home.
The project was completed with Houzz, a home remodeling and design website of which Kutcher is an investor.
“My mom’s had a dream to finish this basement for years, and I have a plan to make that dream come true,”
Kutcher said in a video on the company’s website. “We’re tearing the entire house apart, so if my mom doesn’t like it, somebody’s in big trouble.”
Kutcher, 37, helped his stepfather, Mark Portwood, build the house in
Homestead, Iowa, when he was 13, ABC News reported. Houzz technology allowed him to oversee the renovation project from California.
“It’s my way of saying thank you to my mom,” Kutcher explained in the video. “My mom has been like the greatest influence in my life. My parents gave me everything. They went to great sacrifices to give me the life that I have, and anything that I can do to say thank you is the right thing to do. If I can make this space special for my mom and make it a space that she wants to go spend time in and just really make it beautiful for her that will be fulfilling something I’ve always wanted to do.”
The renovation took 27 days, People magazine reported, and the results thrilled Kutcher’s mom.
“I went to visit Ashton and the new baby, and they decided they needed me to stay out there for a little while to help. And I come home and this is what I find. It does mean a lot to me. It’s beautiful,” Diane said, breaking down in tears during the reveal.
“Mom, we don’t have to cry in every room,” Kutcher teased.
