Arthur McCann transformed his front yard into the American flag for the Fourth of July holiday with the help of field paint, stencils, and measuring tape – all to the delight of his neighbors.
McCann, 36, said the hard work was worth it as the response from neighbors was "through the roof" in Norwood, Massachusetts, WBZ-TV reported. He said the front lawn decoration just happened to coincide with a big Independence Day party he throws at his home every year.
"If you're going to do it, you have to do it right," McCann said. "I just love America and the freedom and opportunities it gives and I love be creative."
He told the Boston Globe he used about 25 cans of field paint to produce the 20-foot by 30-foot flag by hand. He used stencils to paint the 50 white stars and a large measuring tape to make sure the stripes were straight and of equal length.
McCann told the newspaper that his 7-year-old daughter Jenna helped in the effort.
"She made sure all the lines were straight," McCann said. "She made sure I had 50 stars and 13 stripes."
McCann said he plans to create the flag, which took him about two hours to create, over again next year. He first painted the huge flag in his front lawn two years ago, but said that neighbors were disappointed when he didn't repeat it last year.
"I felt such a positive response [the first time] that I felt the need to do it again this year," McCann said to the Globe. "It comes from nothing but love and patriotism and a positive message."
Opinions on the lawn flag were mixed on social media.
