Arie Luyendyk's pregnancy prank for April Fool's has landed the star of "The Bachelor" in hot water — again.
The 36-year-old race car driver is already facing backlash after he swapped fiancees during the final week of the series and now his Twitter "joke" has spurred a fresh wave of outrage, Entertainment Tonight noted.
On Sunday Luyendyk posted a photo of a woman sporting a baby bump, which he tagged fiancee Lauren Burnham in, and wrote "secrets finally out, we have a bunny in the oven!"
Shortly after posting the photo, he revealed it was an April Fools' prank but, rather than have the desired effect he had hoped for, the tweet drew heavy criticism.
"It's not a joke for many struggling families to get pregnant, it's extremely expensive and it's heartbreaking," one Twitter user pointed out.
"So many women are trying everything they can to conceive and then you joke about this? It's just really in poor taste," another user said.
While it is common for people to joke about pregnancy as part of their April Fool's joke, the subject has become an increasingly sensitive one and many are speaking out against the pranks.
Among them is Chelsey Kimmel, a school teacher in Burrillville, Rhode Island, who has been trying to conceive with her partner for over 18 months and has suffered a miscarriage.
"I've known people for a long time who joke that they're pregnant and this year it hit me that it does hurt," she told ABC News.
"I struggle with real posts of people I know and love when they really are pregnant, but when people make a joke [about it], women like me, who want more than anything in the world to be pregnant ... it just really hits home. It can hurt."
The fresh backlash against Luyendyk comes weeks after he dropped Becca Kurfin, who is from Prior Lake, Minnesota, in a breakup aired on "The Bachelor" finale and then proposed to runner-up Burnham on "After the Rose" the following day.
The double proposal cultivated hordes of haters for Luyendyk and prompted Minnesota Rep. Drew Christensen to author a bill to ban the reality TV star from his state.
