Among other divas she puts her own spin on, soul legend Aretha Franklin has covered Adele's 2011 hit "Rolling in the Deep" in her new album "Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics."
Franklin's 10 tracks covers a wide variety of female artists as Franklin attempts to put her signature on each song, from Etta James' "At Last" to Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U." The songs are as diverse as disco era anthem "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor to Barbra Streisand's mellow "People."
Franklin collaborated with music mogul Clive Davis for the album, with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and Andre Benjamin, of the group OutKast, as a couple of the effort's producers,
according to the Huffington Post.
Edmonds also had his hand in producing tracks on Streisand's latest album "Partners."
"I mean, it is great," Davis said. "For her to do all these songs, it's very exciting."
But it is Franklin's take on "Rolling in the Deep" that appears to be creating the most buzz. The song, which was a huge hit for Adele, won an A for effort from
Rolling Stone's Ryan Reed.
"Franklin gives the 2011 smash a fiery makeover, tossing off vocal runs and even incorporating the chorus from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's Motown classic 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough,'" Reed wrote.
Some complained on social media that it sounded like Franklin was being auto tuned, such as performers Cher and T-Pain.
Others on Twitter, though, seemed to enjoy Franklin's take on Adele's hit.
