Anthony Mackie clarified this week that his reported Donald Trump endorsement was meant as nothing more than “a joke."
The 37-year-old "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" actor made his controversial comments during an
exclusive televised interview with BET on Monday, in which he said that if he had to choose between working on Hillary Clinton’s or Trump’s campaign, he would choose the latter.
“If you look at Trump, he’s an easy sell, because you can sell him as the guy who worked his way up from nothing . . . If you’re the pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps candidate, people would identify with that,” Mackie told BET. “I’m on the bandwagon. I’m drinking the Kool-Aid.”
Although Mackie’s BET interview was supposed to be for the express purpose of promoting his upcoming film, “Our Brand Is Crisis,” angry Twitter mobs pounced on Mackie’s Trump comments and denounced the actor, prompting him to issue a
follow-up remark, according to USA Today.
This is not the first time that Mackie has ignited social media ire over his political stances. Earlier this year, the actor was criticized when he said that he encouraged his nephew to avoid groupthink and dreadlocks in order to discourage the police
violence towards black males, according to Breitbart. Mackie has also been slammed for his stance on traditional gender roles in relationships.
But his attempt at smoothing over the Trump situation to backtrack to gain the public’s favor once more did not succeed as more enraged social media users continued to bash him on Twitter.
