An anonymous donor will help Planned Parenthood build two new centers in West Texas by granting $9 million to the cause,
The Dallas Morning News reported.
The region has been void of Planned Parenthood services since the previous centers shut down in 2013, at a time when lawmakers were placing strict restrictions on abortion clinics.
While the law was struck down in 2016 by the U.S. Supreme Court, many believe the damage had already been done as numerous clinics remained closed.
It is not clear whether the two new clinics will offer abortion services, but Planned Parenthood, which provides other essential services such as sex education, contraception, and pregnancy testing, as well as HIV and STD screening, has encountered numerous obstacles over the years.
A massive dent came in 2011, when the Obama administration awarded Title X funding to the Women's Health and Family Planning Association of Texas and banned Planned Parenthood and other abortion services from receiving funding, The Hill reported.
However, Texas officials have been petitioning to get the federal funding back.
In wake of this, the Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas CEO, Ken Lambrecht, announced the donation, the Morning News noted.
The reveal was made at a recent benefit luncheon where former “Sex and the City” star Cynthia Nixon, who is now campaigning for governor of New York, was a keynote speaker.
A separate donor also gifted the group with $800,000 to help in the development of the two new centers.
