Amy Robach Cuts Hair on Air to 'Take Control' of Breast Cancer (Video)

By    |   Thursday, 16 January 2014 07:39 AM EST

Amy Robach, the ABC News correspondent who was diagnosed with breast cancer after having an on-air mammogram in October, cut her hair short in front of the cameras this week to "take control" away from the disease.

The 40-year-old mother of two began chemotherapy last month and, with two rounds under her belt and six more to go, she began to worry about losing her hair.

"Having cancer is one thing, LOOKING like you have cancer is another thing," Robach wrote Wednesday in a "Good Morning America" blog post. "I’ve started to notice, slowly, but surely, my hair has started to appear more regularly in my shower drain, sink drain, pillowcase and comb."

"Waiting and watching my hair fall out made me once again feel so powerless and so I decided to take control," she wrote. "I made my appointment and then after receiving so many letters, cards, emails, and tweets from women who were in my exact same position, I decided to record the cut."

Robach debuted her new pixie 'do Wednesday morning on "GMA."

"I want to say that I had something to do with how I look, not the cancer," she said.

Robach underwent a double mastectomy in mid-November and learned the cancer had spread to one of her lymph nodes. She announced in early December that she plans to work through the four months of chemotherapy her doctors ordered.

"I can only hope my story will … inspire every woman who hears it to get a mammogram, to take a self-exam," Robach wrote in her blog post. "No excuses. It is the difference between life and death."
