A new Marist poll shows a majority of Americans from every political affiliation want abortion to be restricted even though a slight majority (51 percent) are pro-choice.
The poll, which was commissioned by the Knights of Columbus ahead of the annual March for Life event, showed that even six in 10 Americans who identified as pro-choice favored at least some restrictions on abortions, including restricting abortions to the first three or six months of pregnancy.
Seventy-eight percent of independents and 92 percent of Republicans surveyed also favored restrictions on abortions.
One surprising statistic of the poll is that 56 percent believe abortion is morally wrong, a number that includes some who identify as pro-choice.
More than six in 10 Americans thought abortion was morally wrong when it was done because of a possible genetic disease or disorder, and nearly the same percentage favored restricting all abortions after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy except in certain extreme circumstances, such as to save the mother’s life, the poll showed.
Another significant finding was that only 29 percent of those surveyed believed abortion would improve a woman’s life in the long run, with a much higher 52 percent saying abortion does more harm than good. One in four who considered themselves pro-choice believed abortion was more harmful than beneficial.
Including large majorities of both pro-life and pro-choice respondents as well as those of every political affiliation, 78 percent of those surveyed believe laws could protect both a pregnant woman and her unborn child.
Finally, 60 percent of respondents said they opposed taxpayer dollars being used to fund abortions.
