An American Airlines pilot says he saw a UFO fly right over his passenger jet. American Airlines Flight 2292 was traveling from Cincinnati to Phoenix when the incident took place in the area of New Mexico on Sunday.
"Do you have any targets up here? We just had something go right over the top of us," the pilot said in a radio transmission accidently recorded by a blogger, Steve Douglass, who then uploaded it to his site, Deep Blue Horizon.
"I hate to say this — looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile type of thing moving really fast. It went right over the top of us," the pilot continued in the radio transmission.
Speaking with The Arizona Republic, Douglass said it was "pure coincidence" that he recorded the transmission. He was trying to find a mayday call from another aircraft whose engines burst into flames when he heard the pilot.
"I was just as surprised as everybody else was," he said.
American Airlines confirmed in a statement that the transmission came from American Airlines Flight 2292.
"Following a debrief with our Flight Crew and additional information received, we can confirm this radio transmission was from American Airlines Flight 2292 on Feb. 21," the statement read.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Ian Gregor told the outlet that air traffic controllers had not seen any object on their radarscopes in the area on the day. Adding to the mystery, southern New Mexico's White Sands Missile Range said it did not do tests in the area. The director of public affairs, Scott Stearns, said he contacted the Holloman Air Force Base, also located in the area, and "they have nothing at all up there."
A Holloman Air Force Base spokesperson said they would investigate the matter.
