An American Airlines flight made an emergency landing at LAX Thursday and eight people were later checked out by paramedics for respiratory issues.
Flight No. 564 left Mineta San Jose International Airport for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport late Thursday morning when the airliner experienced an "unspecified
mechanical issue," an official told the San Jose Mercury News. The issue reportedly cause the oxygen masks onboard to deploy.
The plane touched down in Los Angeles around 11 a.m.
Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey told the newspaper that seven passengers and a flight attendant were treated for respiratory irritation because of an unidentified odor in the cabin, but no one was hospitalized.
A Fox 11 TV report, though, said that one woman was transported to a hospital after alerting emergency crews to a respiratory issue.
"We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience, and are working to get them to Arizona as soon as possible," American Airlines said in a statement after the emergency LAX landing.
All passengers were re-booked on
other flights to Phoenix, ABC15.com reported.
A similar incident happened on a United Airlines jet flying out of Tucson, Arizona, this week. That flight was traveling from Tucson International Airport to Los Angeles when cabin smoke
forced it to return to Arizona, according to ABC7.com.
