Ebola Scare Prompts Emergency Landing for American Airlines Flight

An American Airlines flight made an emergency landing late Tuesday night in Texas after a passenger began showing signs associated with Ebola infection, including vomiting. After her removal by hazmat teams, a city official said it was unlikely the woman has the virus.

"At this point we are considering it not to be Ebola but we never want to rule anything completely out," Midland city spokesperson Sara Bustilloz told CBS affiliate KOSA. "It’s highly unlikely that it is Ebola."

Bustilloz said that the woman was traveling from Istanbul, Turkey, through London to Dallas-Fort Worth. Flight 2791 to Midland landed as scheduled, but was considered an emergency landing because the pilot notified authorities that ground teams were needed to deal with the sick passenger.

"The captain of an American Eagle flight headed to Midland from Dallas called roughly 20 minutes before the plane landed at 11:05 p.m. to alert authorities that a female passenger was displaying flu-like symptoms. At some point in the flight, Ebola was mentioned," the city of Midland said in a statement.

"Because of this, Midland Fire Department personnel who are stationed at the airport were ready when the flight landed and boarded the plane to assess the situation. The female passenger was vomiting but did not have a fever. She was also traveling from Istanbul, Turkey, which has not had any confirmed Ebola cases. This makes Ebola highly unlikely in this scenario, but authorities took infectious disease precautions in transporting the passenger to a local hospital to be treated and monitored."

City officials reported further that they obtained the most up-to-date contact info from the 69 other people aboard the flight and remain in contact with the Centers for Disease Control.

According to CBS News Houston, two other flights have experienced similar Ebola scares in recent months. In both cases, the passengers were isolated and evaluated. Neither had Ebola.
