America is defined by so many things — its culturally rich heritage, diverse cuisine and cosmopolitan nation. There is so much to this beautiful country it would be impossible to know everything about its history, tradition and people. 1. A 17-year-old designed the flag. The current American flag was created in the classroom. It was 17-year old Robert Heff who designed it as part of a high-school project in 1958. He submitted his design to the White House and the rest is American history.
2. Pizza is the ultimate food. In the U.S., we consume 3 billion pizzas a year, which is enough to cover 100 acres per day. Americans really do love pizza.
3. You can shoot hoops at the Supreme Court. Justices and their clerks have figured out the perfect way to unwind after a stressful day — by shooting hoops on a basketball court on the top floor of the Supreme Court building.
4. The Constitution is based on a Native American concept. Despite what most of us think, the constitution is not a concept that was created entirely by the founding fathers. It is actually created according to the Iroquois confederacy of Native American tribes.
5. There is no official language. English is one of the predominant languages spoken in the U.S. but it was never declared an official language by the federal government.
6. America's oldest book is over 300 centuries old. The "Bay Psalm Book," published in 1640, is believed to be the first-ever book to be published in America. There are only 11 known copies in existence and one of them was sold at auction in 1993 for $14.2 million.
7. Independence Day could have been July 2. Independence Day is celebrated on July 4 because it was when John Hancock became the first man to sign the official documentation on that date in 1776, but Congress officially declared independence from England on July 2.
8. Mustangs were imported. The old American west does not seem complete without the wild mustang but the majestic animals are actually of Spanish descent and were introduced to America in the 16th century.
9. George Washington did not have wooden teeth. George Washington lost his teeth early in life but it is a misconception that he had wooden teeth. It is believed that his dentures were made from a unique combination of human, donkey and horse teeth.
10. The Wright brothers did not go to college. It is easy to see why most people believe that the two men who invented the airplane would have graduated from college but Wilbur and Orville Wright, often referred to as the Wright Brothers, did not.
