In Amazon Super Bowl Ad, Celebs Give Alexa a Sick Day

Amazon’s Super Bowl LII ad imagines a scenario where Alexa loses her voice and various celebrities fill in for her until she can get over her cold.

The 90-second ad, which cost more than $15 million, Business Insider reported, features a number of celebrities, and founder and CEO Jeff Bezos also appears.

At the beginning of the commercial, Amazon staff are mostly confident the celeb subs will be able to fill Alexa’s shoes, but it turns out to be a disaster as Gordon Ramsey berates a user for asking how to make a grilled cheese sandwich and Anthony Hopkins creepily channels Hannibal Lecter instead of making a call.

Other celebrities who appear include rapper Cardi B and Rebel Wilson.

The ad produced some interesting reactions after its pre-release, with some fans wondering if the Amazon Echo would be available in different voices and others coveting the big blue headsets (which turned out to be just a prop, sorry), TechCrunch reported. The company has filed patents for Alexa-enabled headphones, but they are still just in the theoretical stage of development, apparently.

Even customized voices are unlikely any time soon, as Alexa made clear at the end of the ad when she said, “I’ll take it from here.”

Twitter couldn’t help speculating, though.
