Amazon Hologram Smartphone Release Set for Later This Year

By    |   Monday, 14 April 2014 11:10 AM EDT

An Amazon hologram smartphone release is reportedly scheduled for later this year as the Seattle-based internet commerce company attempts to rise above Apple and Samsung in the highly competitive smartphone market.

The phone, according to the online retailer, will not require special glasses to see the 3D images it produces, the International Business Times reported.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the hologram smartphone has already been demonstrated by Amazon to developers in San Francisco and Seattle. The company reportedly plans of introducing the new device in late June, while being available to purchase it in September, in time for the Christmas shopping season.

According to Amazon, the new smartphone employs retina-tracking technology that makes some images appear 3-D, as if they were a hologram. The new technology is said to be embedded in four front-facing cameras, or sensors, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The online retailer has yet to say what operating system the phone would use, but if the company’s Kindle Fire tablet and the Fire TV set-top box are any indication, it will likely rely on Google's Android mobile operating system, the International Business Times noted.

The announcement of the phone prompted some Twitter responses from technology observers, such as tech analyst, Kurt Marko.

In addition to the hologram smartphone, Amazon says it will also be introducing a magic wand-like device that allows customers to reorder products without having to log into the site with a computer, the International Business Times reported. The wand apparently scans the items barcodes which in turn places the order.
