The Alpha Tau Omega fraternity has closed its doors at Indiana University after a video surfaced of an alleged hazing incident that involved strippers and oral sex.
In the recorded video, a man later identified as a fraternity brother is seen performing oral sex on a woman said to be a stripper as others watch, cheer, and
pass around alcohol, the New York Daily News reported.
Alpha Tau Omega CEO Wynn Smiley said in a statement that the national chapter is revoking the fraternity's charter, and also said an investigation revealed that no pledges were forced to participate in the incident.
"Regardless, the actions are contrary to the ideals and principals of Alpha Tau Omega and are highly offensive,” Smiley's statement said.
Citing "credible video evidence" of the hazing allegations brought forward on Wednesday, a
statement from the Indiana University's Bloomington campus said on Thursday that, pending an investigation, the fraternity would be ordered to cease and desist all campus activities.
"Indiana University takes its responsibility to foster a culture of care and respect among the students on its campuses extremely seriously," the university statement said. "If true, the alleged actions on the part of some members of the Alpha Tau Omega chapter run completely contrary to that commitment. They also would represent violations of the university's student code of conduct and will not be tolerated."
Although the chapter's charter has been revoked, an action that the university praised as "swift and strong," the News said a university spokesperson said an investigation into violations of the student code of conduct would continue.
