After posting a meme showing a car plowing into protesters with the words "All Lives Splatter," South Dakota state Rep. Lynne DiSanto is facing the consequences, including losing her day job and a speaking engagement.
The meme, which the Republican lawmaker posted on Facebook Sept. 7 — less than a month since Heather Heyer was killed in Charlottesville, Virginia, when a white nationalist drove a vehicle into counter-protesters at the Unite the Right rally — is a play on words referring to the phrase “all lives matter,” a response to the Black Lives Matter movement.
The meme’s caption also said, “Nobody cares about your protest” and “Keep your a** out of the road.”
Initial comments on the "All Lives Splatter" meme from friends and constituents were positive, but as it was shared with a wider audience, the comments turned more negative until DiSanto deleted the post on Tuesday.
"I am sorry if people took offense to it and perceived my message in any way insinuating support or condoning people being hit by cars," DiSanto told the Rapid City Journal. "I perceived it differently. I perceived it as encouraging people to stay out of the street."
Tuesday evening, Keller Williams Realty Black Hills posted on its Facebook page, “Due to recent events, Lynne Disanto is no longer associated with Keller Williams Realty Black Hills.”
The group Working Against Violence also said it was looking for a new speaker for an event after DiSanto posted the meme, the Argus Leader reported.
DiSanto is the GOP majority whip in the House, and her position is not expected to be affected by the posting of the meme, the Leader reported.
