Advent Calendar, a Religious Tradition, Gets Commercialized

By    |   Tuesday, 26 November 2013 08:43 AM EST

The Advent Calendar is used by many Christians prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas time, but as with so many Christmas traditions, the Advent Calendar has become increasingly commercialized and some incorporate alcohol, chocolate, and makeup into their designs.

Though the actual day when Advent begins varies year to year, the Advent Calendar traditionally starts on Dec. 1. The calendar consists of 25 sections, each containing an object for each of the 25 days. Celebrants remove an object with the passing of each day until they reach Dec. 25 – Christmas Day.

As observed by the Roman Catholic Church and various Protestant denominations in the West, Advent begins the fourth Sunday before Dec. 25, which this year happens to coincide with the traditional start of the Advent Calendar on Dec. 1.

The traditional Advent Calendar generally consists of a simple pocketed 25-day calendar, usually made of a cloth-like material that is hung on the wall.

However,  the Advent Calendar has become increasingly commercialized over the years and as a result companies have designed Advent Calendars to appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike.
