Casino Moguls Finance Nev. GOP Races

By    |   Thursday, 11 October 2012 12:51 PM EDT

Las Vegas casinos controlled by Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson are spending huge amounts of money to influence Nevada’s legislative races this year, adding to their roles in financing national political campaigns.

Wynn and Adelson have been critical of national Democrats, mainly President Barack Obama, and have given more than a half-million dollars to the Republican State Leadership Committee, reports the Las Vegan Sun, citing IRS filings.

According to the Sun, the committee has been targeting five state Senate races that could determine whether Democrats maintain control of the upper chamber. Republicans need to pick up four of the seats to take over.

The contributions to the leadership committee came as a surprise to some in the state because Nevada casinos have a history of giving money to both sides in state elections. But the Sun, quoting Republicans, noted that conservative business interests in the state have been increasingly concerned about Democratic efforts to increase taxes.

As a result, Casino owners like Wynn and Adelson are backing efforts to elect a more business-friendly Republican legislature in Nevada along with a Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
