Sources said that many actresses including presenters and nominees plan to wear black to the Golden Globes on Jan. 7, 2018, to protest gender inequality and the many sexual abuse allegations that have come to light in Hollywood since October.
Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep, and Emma Stone were mentioned as participating in the plan, but many others are expected to join in as well, People reported. The plans may even extend through the whole award season, sources said.
The move is intended to go beyond previous efforts to support causes by wearing pins and other accessories and to show strong support for women in Hollywood who have been harassed and seemingly overlooked when it comes to handing out awards as well, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It was announced Wednesday that the Screen Actors Guild Awards will feature all female presenters in a similar gesture of solidarity, THR reported.
A recent Creative Artists Agency meeting also suggested reviving Jennifer Seibel Newsom’s 2014 #ASkHerMore campaign in an effort to treat women more fully as human beings than just beautiful objects, THR reported.
“AskHerMore is fundamentally about treating women as full human beings rather than objects,” Newsom said, THR reported. “I hope red carpet interviewers ask about the power the media has to make a difference in the world, how those involved in creating it can set a better example and the importance of broadening who gets to have a say in creating that media.”
Newsom also mentioned that five white men had been nominated for best director, even though women and minorities are also making movies, THR reported.
“White men are not the only people making good films,” she said. “They are just the ones being recognized. Let’s talk about that on the red carpet.”
