Honda's Accord was named the 2018 Car of the Year on Monday at the North American International Auto Show, making it the third year in a row that a Honda model has won one of three awards given to various car types.
Auto experts called the newly redesigned Accord the best iteration of its 41-year history, with sleeker styling and a roomier interior as well as a turbo-charged engine, CNN Money reported. A hybrid variety is available as one option for the vehicle.
The Volvo XC60 also won Utility of the Year, and the Lincoln Navigator won Truck of the Year in a year when most pickup trucks did not see major changes, CNN Money reported. Only new or substantially changed models were eligible for the award, with judges considering innovation, design, safety, driver satisfaction, and value for the dollar as criteria.
The 2018 Accord gets up to 38 miles to the gallon on the highway and can have a 1.5 or 2.0 liter turbo-powered engine or a two-motor hybrid engine. It will go on sale early this year, Honda News reported.
Safety features including adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, automatic braking, traffic sign recognition, lane keeping assist, and forward collision alert, USA Today reported. Easier buttons and dials for audio and climate make for a nicer driving experience as well.
The Honda Ridgeline truck won truck of the year in 2017, and the Civic won car of the year in 2016, CNN Money reported.
The awards are "chosen by a panel of more than 60 jurors from print, online, and broadcast media across the United States and Canada," according to the award show website.
Twitter users praised the Accord, both newer and older versions.
