Abigail Hernandez Faces Alleged Kidnapper at Arraignment (Video)

Abigail Hernandez kept her composure in a New Hampshire courtroom on Tuesday as her alleged kidnapper, 34-year-old Nathaniel E. Kibby, was arraigned, with his bail set at $1 million.

Hernandez, known to her sister and mother who sat by her side as "Abby," went missing on her way home from Conway High School last October — just days before her 15th birthday. She returned home on July 20, but the details of her disappearance and return are still unclear as federal officials, local police, and prosecutors work in concert to prepare a case against Kibby.

Boston's WCVB-TV interviewed one FBI agent, however, who shed some light on her homecoming.

"It was Abby herself who led to her safe return," said special agent Kiernan Ramsey. "It was her courage and resolve."

Kibby entered no plea at the arraignment on the advice of his lawyer, who said the details of the charges were still too vague to plead innocent or guilty, but details of his previous arrest record came to light that same day.

Court records revealed that Kibby had been arrested twice while the teen was missing. One arrest came just two weeks after Hernandez's disappearance. Kibby pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and was released after paying more than $400 in fines. He was also arrested on March 4 on a simple assault and trespassing charge.

Neighbors commented on Kibby, who was arrested without incident at his home in Gorham last week, with one saying, "I haven’t noticed anything unusual. He came and went, and occasionally I would say hi to him, but that was about it."

Kibby's boss of five years, the owner of EMM Precision in Center Conway, said he was a model employee, and was laid off in April.

Some pointed suspiciously to a shipping container Kibby kept in the backyard of his trailer park home, which some described as an above-ground bunker, wondering if Hernandez had ever been kept there. Others say he also maintained a shooting range in the yard. The owners of the trailer park told reporters from The Boston Globe that he always paid his rent, $300, on time.
