The mother of ISIS captive Abdul-Rahman Kassig reached out through the Internet to the organization that threatened last week to kill her son, telling it, “I am an old woman, and Abdul-Rahman is my only child.”
Paula Kassig also said in the message she tweeted to several known members of the Islamic State: “My husband and I are on our own, with no help from the government. We would like to talk to you. How can we reach you?”
Last week, the Islamic State released a video in which the group threatened to kill Abdul-Rahman Kassig, 26. He was captured while doing humanitarian work in Syria on Oct. 1, 2013.
The Kassig family has uploaded videos to YouTube imploring the group to release their son.
In one of those videos, Abdul-Rahman Kassig’s father, Ed Kassig, said, “The driving force in our family has always been to serve others. Our family deplores all human suffering and the loss of innocent life, no matter who is responsible. We respond by trying to provide aid and assistance. Our son was living his life according to that same humanitarian call when he was taken captive. ... We implore his captors to show mercy and use our power to let our son go.”
In a letter written to his parents in June,
Adbul-Rahman Kassig said, according to CNN, that he was "obviously pretty scared to die, but the hardest part is not knowing, wondering, hoping, and wondering if I should even hope at all."
