ABC, which is owned by Disney, announced Tuesday that it will air a live musical version of “The Little Mermaid” in October.
The two-hour special event follows in the successful live television musical footsteps of "The Sound of Music" and "Grease."
Cast announcements for “The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!” have not yet been made, but the network said it would feature some “favorite celebrity artists,” USA Today reported.
The show was announced at the annual network pitch to advertisers.
NBC plans to produce “Bye Bye Birdie” starring Jennifer Lopez in December and “Jesus Christ Superstar” next Easter, while Fox plans to do “A Christmas Story” and “Rent” in the near future.
ABC will air a remake of “Dirty Dancing” on May 24, but it will not be live.
The live "Little Mermaid" is scheduled to air Oct. 3.
Some on Twitter were excited, while others were more blasé about the news.
